A Monograph of the Trogonidae, or Family of Trogons was published by the author in 1858-75. This was one of the favourite bird families of Gould. The beauty of many of the subjects in these prints is enhanced by the addition of backgrounds of tropical flora and smaller birds. "The Trogons may dispute the palm of beauty with the Hummingbirds. Their plumage in certain parts shines with metallic brilliancy, and exhibits all the colours of the rainbow." ( from Gould's introduction).
