CAINE, W. Ralph Hall (author). A. Heaton COOPER (illustrator). Isle of Man. London; Adam And Charles Black. 1909.

Large 8vo.; publisher's polished dark red cloth panelled in black and decorated and lettered in gilt to spine and both covers, top edges gilt; pp. [iv], v-xv + [i] + 240 (including index) + [4], publisher's list; with 20 fine coloured plates with captioned guards, a tipped-in folding reproduction of John Speed's map of 1605 and a folding general map of the island to the rear; a very good, lightly rubbed, copy in bright condition with a hint of fading to spine, internally very clean with the usual offset-toning to endpapers and a neat early gift inscription to front free endpaper.
First edition. Interestingly this binding design incorporates what appears to be a swastika in gilt to the spine. The Manx triskelion is a version of the sun symbol or swastika and is one of the oldest continually used government symbols. It is believed to have been introduced to the island when the Norse ruled the area, in 1266.
