DULAC, Edmund (illustrator). Nathaniel HAWTHORNE (author). Tanglewood Tales. London, Hodder and Stoughton. [1918].

4to. Original maize yellow cloth pictorially decorated in terracotta and mustard, lettered gilt to spine, pictorial endpapers; pp. [viii] + 244 + [i]; decorated title on grey stock, frontispiece mounted on grey paper and 13 additional fine mounted coloured plates by Dulac in wonderful Art Deco style; a very good and clean copy with softening and slight wear to spine ends, small knocks to lower forecorners, internally clean throughout save some offset-toning to free endpapers, all plates fine.
First edition illustrated by Dulac. This fine illustrated collection of tales drawn from Greek mythology includes the stories of "The Minotaur"; "The Dragon's Teeth"; "The Golden Fleece" and "The Pomegranate Seeds". The critic of The Times, in December 1918, described it as "one of the very best [books] which this season has to show". The illustrations are painted in a style uniformly drawn from the ancient world and resemble archaeological paintings from Greek vases, with a stylish Art Deco twist.
