Original black cloth with a heraldic design printed in yellow with yellow and orange borders, spine printed in yellow and orange and blocked in gilt, top edges gilt; profusely illustrated with 77 coloured plates guarded by captioned tissues, with a folding pull-out map to the rear; externally fine save a little speckled foxing confined to fore-edge of book block; internally extremely clean and crisp with previous owner's armorial bookplate to front pastedown and an 8-line neatly calligraphed contemporary inscription, dated 1911, to front free endpaper.
Early printing of the first edition; reprinted several times up until 1918. The small shield on the title-page is in black in the first issue and in red in all that follow, as in this copy. Inman 5.
