Oblong 12mo. Contemporary morocco-backed paper-covered boards, rebacked, retaining original backstrip, endpapers renewed, spine lettered in gilt, covers ornamented in blind; pp. [2, title = front wrapper], 8, 50 hand-coloured aquatint plates; very clean and fresh internally, scarce.

Second edition (first, the year before) of one of the most charming and early aquatint works of views of Switzerland. The young Carl Bodmer (born 1809) was later to accompany Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied to North Ameriica, where he became one of the early 'great American painters'.
