Children's and Illustrated Books

Our ever-changing selection of children's and illustrated books is individually chosen on the basis of beauty, excellence of condition and importance. Our stock ranges from chapbooks of the early 19th century to modern classics by masters such as Roald Dahl and Maurice Sendak. We are particularly known for our interest in illustrated gift books of the early 1900s, as conceived by artists such as Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, the Robinson Brothers, Kay Nielsen and Willy Pogany. Classic children's literature from all periods forms the bulk of our stock, hopefully allowing us to satisfy requests from confirmed book collectors and to proffer alternatives to gift-buyers looking for christening, birthday, wedding and anniversary presents.

Natural History

This is a traditionally strong area of interest for Sotheran's, with our unparalleled collection of John Gould ornithological lithographs. We maintain a selection of fine antiquarian bird books in stock, together with sought-after and scarce works in the areas of botany and zoology both British and foreign. We also specialise in books relating to Darwinism, evolution, genetics and human biology.

Science

Sotherans has a long tradition of dealing with fine science books stretching back to 1906, when work began on our Bibliotheca Chemico-Mathematica. This exhaustive bibliography, which was published between 1921 and 1952, remains an important resource. We now stock books across a broad range of scientific subjects, including geology, evolutionary science, physics, medicine, astronomy, mathematics and technology. We also have a good stock of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society and offprints from scientific journals.
