First US edition of the author's first book. In this travelogue of Spain Lewis as already the critical observer of social inequality and struggle of the lower classes. He witnessed the insurrections and strikes of October, 1934, a glimpse of what was to come in Spanish history. Lewis established himself as one of the leading travel writers of Britain for the next eight dedcades. Anthony Burgess famously wrote about the quality of his writieng 'His prose is almost edible. In old age he is writing better than ever’ (quoted in an Eland publication of Empire of the East).
