Henry Sotheran Ltd. Rare Books and Prints 200 Years of Bookselling in London

Welcome to our April Newsletter.

We hope that the last stages of the refurbishment, the refit of the Children's and Illustrated department, will be completed very soon, whereupon we plan to have some celebratory parties to re launch the new look of the shop in proper style.

We are working on a Spring Miscellany and also a Children's and Illustrated catalogue. Please contact Oliver if you would like a copy. A listing of the Miscellany can be found here.

Just coming into stock is a collection of John Betjeman and John Piper material. Please click here to download the list.

Although we are carrying less in the way of Art and Architecture a few interesting things have come our way. Click here to view on the website.

The first separate selections from our large Performing Arts collection have now been catalogued and are available.

Here is a video walk through of A Collection of Noël Coward Theatre Posters. Full listing here.

We also have a small collection of Alec Guinness ephemera here.

Illustrated London News CYPRUS - ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS. The volume for the second half of the year 1878.

London, George C. Leighton, 1878. Folio. Highly illustrated with superb wood-engravings throughout, a very clean and fresh copy.
One of the best pictorial and textual documentations of Cyprus, compiled in the year the British took control of the previously Ottoman island. The Cyprus-related articles marvel at the picturesque architecure and rough landscape, describe the logistic difficulties, painting a vivid picture of life on the island in the late 1870s. Rather hard to find intact … more …

House of Commons. 1823. Folio. Unbound, near fine.

This copy is the first separate printing of the British government's reprint of Babbage's 1822 letter to Sir Humphry Davy upon the completion of his experimental difference engine. Orchids DARWIN, Charles Robert. On The Various Contrivances by Which British and Foreign Orchids are Fertilised by Insects, and on the good effects of intercrossing.

John Murray, 1862. 8vo., a really sparkling copy.
First edition, first issue. Life and Letters quotes Asa Gray as saying that "if the Orchid-book […] had appeared before the Origin the author would have been canonised rather than anathematised". The book was concerned with the relationships between sexual structures of orchids and the insects which fertilise them, their evolution being attributed to natural selection. Fewer than 2,000 copies were printed of this edition, which sold slowly, and though there was a second edition in 1877 there has never been a reprint of the first edition … more …
