Henry Sotheran Ltd. Rare Books and Prints 200 Years of Bookselling in London

Welcome to our August newsletter. These are exciting times as we start to move back into our new shop space. Work in progress still but well on the way. We are happy to receive visitors and the shop will be open as usual from 9.30 to 6.00 throughout the week. We have not yet arranged our Saturday opening but we will be reporting on that soon.

taking shape

One of the major changes sees the opening of a new Illustrated Room downstairs. This will draw together the Children’s and Illustrated Books and our Private Press holdings which previously were housed in separate areas in the shop. We will be enhancing this with a large collection of Trianon Press Blake facsimiles and Ben Shahn illustrated books.

Other changes see the migration of the Travel Department downstairs. Historically the downstairs area was home to the Travel and Architecture Departments and there is expansive existing shelving behind the print display walls. We have opened up one wall of shelving to accommodate Georg’s books. Rest assured, however, that we have not forgotten Richard and the Print Department. The remaining wall space will still hang our usual varied displays of prints, posters and maps. A separate gallery space has been created for cameo exhibitions from our stock, and is available for hire for third parties to host pop-up exhibitions. Please contact Katie if you are interested in hiring the space.

We have not been idle in our refurbishment period. A Performing Arts catalogue is about to go to the printers, Georg has a large Travel catalogue ready to go and we are putting together Piccadilly Notes 64, a general catalogue to come out in the autumn.

In the meantime another new list of Cookery, wine, medicine and related items can be downloaded here.

In our on-going development of building contacts with other complimentary businesses we are pleased to announce a link to a new gym/club opening in St James’s Square in September. We will be supplying books for display in their library area. These will be changed on a regular basis to reflect specific events or topics. The club is an exciting new, local, development. Click here to see them blowing their own trumpet.

We would like to thank everyone for their patience throughout our building works. There will be formal celebratory parties in September but do come and visit us before then and see the changes that we have made. We are very pleased with the new look and hope that you will be too.
