Happy New Year - welcome to our first Newsletter of 2018.

With so may films on the television over the Christmas period we thought it might be timely to offer a selection of books upon which movies and television series have been based. Click here to see the list.

Coming up this year we will be having an exhibition of some of the original plates for the Cresset Press edition of Gulliver's Travels by Rex Whistler. We are delighted to be offering these for sale in conjunction with Cameron Treleavan of Aquila Books in Calgary.

We will also be exhibiting at the ABAA California Book Fair in Pasadena February 9–11. Do come and cheer Andrew up by stopping by if you are visiting the fair. We will be happy to take any items of interest out to the fair to show to clients, so do check our website in case there is something we can bring over for you.

In the summer we will be exhibiting at the ABA Book Fair in its new venue in Battersea.

For our institutional clients we are pleased to report that we will again be sponsoring part of the RBMS Conference in New Orleans in June.

First edition. Extracted from Transactions of the Linnean Society of London volume XXIV. This remarkable plant was discovered by Friedrich Martin Josef Welwitsch in 1859 and named after him by Hooker in this paper. A native of Angola and Namibia, it is known as the 'living fossil' as individual specimens can live to 1000 years. Victorian green morocco, elaborate gilt foliate borders to sides, spine with raised bands, gilt panels and lettering, gilt turn ins, all edges gilt; pp. xxiv + 640, 46 illustrations, extra-illustrated with 83 tipped in engravings taken from Yarrell's British Birds and Fish, Thomas Bell's British Quadrupeds and Jenyn's 1843 edition of Selborne, manuscript copy of Bernard Barton's poem "Selborne" bound in ; spine a little sunned, very occasional spots, very good. Provenance: half title with ownership inscription of John Martin "in remembrance of/ the Editor", with Martin's bookplate to front pastedown. Also bound in are letters to Martin from John Joseph Bennett, the editor's brother, and Thomas Bell, the naturalist. There is also a newspaper cutting tipped in discussing the sale of Gilbert White's house, which, as a manuscript note attests, was bought by Bell, and to the verso of the half-title a manuscript copy of of Bell's account of the death of Edward Turner Bennett taken from his British Quadrupeds.

The official state travel agency of the Soviet Union, founded in 1929, here calls to the English-speaking world to visit the vast and rapidly developing country. First editon. In 1889 the Zhob Valley and Gomal Pass were taken under the control of the British Government. Original crimson cloth, with 2 photographic plates, one of the tiger, the other a "posed" portrait of the author, and 24 other collotype plates after delightful "amateur" originals (by the author?); a fine copy.
Second edition. Sheffield relates a hunting incident taking place in The Midnapore District in Bengal in 1879, in which he was badly mauled by a Tiger he had shot. Although he bagged the feline, his wounds became infected and he was "obliged to take from 60 to 80 drops of laudanum every night for 6 months." 8vo. two manuscript notes tipped in, the first from R. H. Isherwood, librarian of the Lancashire Author's Association, expressing gratitude to a Mr. J. Howard Hall for supplying information regarding the authorship of the work; the second from Dr. Henry Brierley, dated 1927, confirming Staley as the author and providing a brief account of her 'eccentric' personality.
Very rare privately printed sole edition of this provincially published travelogue by Finetta Staley of Rochdale, the work recounts Staley's luxurious tour of Western Europe; including a stay at Chamonix, Mont Blanc and a trip taken by her husband to the Mer de Glace 'using hands as well as feet' … more …
