First edition, unnumbered copy from a limited edition of 485. The standard and most comprehensive work on the dodo of Mauritius and the Solitaires of Réunion and Rodriguez. The nephew of the last shogun, Hachisuka was a Japanese aristocrat whose passion for ornithology was nurtured during his studies at Selwyn College Cambridge. He made a number of important ornithological expeditions to Iceland, North Africa and the Congo. He died in 1953 and this essential work was published posthumously.
